Empowering Girls through Sports and Community
Halifax, Nova Scotia, 27 August 2023 – A groundbreaking initiative is set to light up the local sports scene as the ONE Basketball League is launched. This innovative free basketball league is exclusively designed for young female students, from grades 5 to 10, and promises an exciting blend of teamwork, skill-building, and community engagement.
ONE Basketball League, hosted at Rockingstone Heights, brings together girls of all skill levels, including those trying basketball for the first time. The league's core value is inclusivity, making it the perfect platform for girls who want to be part of a dynamic team, enjoy the thrill of the game, and keep active while forming lasting friendships.
"At ONE Basketball In-House League, every girl's potential is worth exploring, and the joy of sports is for all," says Jodi Brown, the visionary behind the league. "Our year-round commitment goes beyond basketball – we're a community that empowers through various programs: practices, games, camps, and tournaments. Our vision is a vibrant, inclusive basketball community nurturing young talent. With an initial goal of 40 participants, we prioritize fair teams, with matching skill levels. Our journey includes successful local games and proud participation in U12, U14, and U16 tournaments. We're dedicated to growth and camaraderie. We're actively pushing for earlier schedules while maximizing the current situation."
The approach to team selection involves hosting tryout sessions where girls practice together and play, ensuring that every participant has the chance to showcase their skills. The emphasis is on fair team formation, creating an environment where everyone can contribute and grow.
There's a Pre-Season Tournament scheduled for September 23rd and 24th, marking an exciting kickoff to the 2023/24 basketball season. Evaluations will take place during the first few practices in September, culminating in the tournament, which will be a pivotal step in shaping the teams for the in-house league games starting in October. The Fall season will run until December, followed by the Winter season from January to March, the Spring season from April to May, and the Summer season from June to August.
Registration for ONE Basketball is now open, and we invite interested participants to secure their spot by registering through this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfLTGmEh0WJsJn0iInLE7oSSkUSSXJiEYF8J20QPnOPaSiMtQ/viewform?usp=sf_link The organizers are excited to extend a warm welcome to girls of diverse backgrounds, varying skill levels, and a range of aspirations. This marks the dawn of a fresh era of female empowerment through the realm of sports.
To ensure well-balanced teams, we are introducing a "first 8 in" policy for each age category. This means that the first 8 registrations within each specific age group will be accepted.
Our tournament warmly welcomes teams from all places and clubs. The event will highlight three divisions, each comprising four teams. We're thrilled to extend an invitation for teams to join this exciting competition. You can access the registration link here https://form.jotform.com/231607063910045. Our own teams are anticipated to compete in Division 3/4. We're especially enthusiastic about the participation of four Division 1/2 teams and teams from Division 5/6. This inclusive approach creates an all-divisions basketball tournament that celebrates talent across a diverse range.
